March 2025 Quiz

Subscribe to our email list if you’d like to receive these quizzes as soon as they come out in our monthly newsletter.

Sometimes these quiz photos will be from Africa, sometimes from North America, and sometimes from elsewhere, but don’t worry, we will always tell you the location. Give it a try and let’s learn together!

Question 1

1. This photo was taken in the Greater Kruger region of South Africa. Who left this track, and why do you think so?

Vervet monkey hand, tracks, padded-foot, primate, Greater Kruger region, South Africa, Kersey Lawrence
A vervet monkey hand (front track) from the Greater Kruger region of South Africa.
Location
Hoedspruit, central Kruger region, South Africa
Photographer
Kersey Lawrence
Answer

This is a padded-foot track with distinct toes that show some connection to a large, multi-sectioned central pad. The central pad has a “V” shape at the bottom. The number of toes here is tricky, because like a lot of other 5-toed beings across the world, this time it is only showing 4 toes clearly. Those long-fingery toes and the V shape at the back indicate that this is a vervet monkey track, the hand, to be specific.

Question 2

2. This photo was taken in southern Vermont, USA. What happened here? Who is responsible, and why do you think so?

Porcupine, padded-foot, tracks, snow, Vermont, USA, North America, Shane Hawkins, Erethizontidae
North American porcupine tracks in the snow in southern Vermont.
Location
No exact city/town, Vermont, USA
Photographer
Shane Hawkins
Answer

In this scene we see several trails in snow. The two similar trails in the center of the picture show a wavy trail pattern, a short stride, and proportionately large feet. Nearby, there was a den with copious amounts of scat, and feeding sign on tree bark. These trails were made by a porcupine walking from its den to a water source and back again towards its den.

How did you do? We’d love to hear from you!

In fact, we welcome your photo contributions from anywhere in the world! Send them to us HERE with your explanation of where they are from, what you think they are, and why you think so, and we could include them in a future quiz (giving you credit of course). Your photos will also become part of our searchable database that trackers can use for learning!

You can view old quizzes on the Original Wisdom website under the Resources tab, in the Tracking Gallery.
